Jaundice Evaluation

Newborn jaundice is very common and can be identified by the yellowing of a baby’s skin and/or eyes. The result of high levels of bilirubin (a yellow-pigmented substance) in the baby’s blood, newborn jaundice occurs when an infant is unable to complete the normal breakdown of red blood cells. Because the systems of newborns are still developing, it can be more difficult to remove bilirubin as effectively as older babies and adults would, thus resulting in jaundice.

Most cases of jaundice go away naturally, typically within 2-3 weeks. However, if jaundice persists longer than 3 weeks, there may be an underlying issue. We recommend you seek medical care from a pediatrician to rule out any other existing conditions. If left untreated, high levels of bilirubin put babies at risk of cerebral palsy, deafness, and other forms of brain damage. To be safe, the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that all newborns be examined for jaundice before being discharged from the hospital, and again when the baby is 3-5 days old.
